మహారాష్ట్ర దక్షిణ భాగంలో పంచగంగా నది ఒడ్డున కొల్హాపూర్ నగరం ఉంది. ఇది జిల్లా కేంద్రం. కొల్హాపూర్‌ని దక్షిణ కాశీ అని పిలుస్తారు. ఇచ్చట శ్రీ మహాలక్ష్మి అమ్మ వారిని దర్శించగలము. అమ్మను అంబాబాయి అని కూడ పిలుస్తారు. ఇది శక్తి పీఠాలలో ఒకటిగా ప్రతీతి. పురాణాలలో కొల్హాపూర్‌ను "కర్వీర్" అని పిలిచేవారు. చాళుక్య వంశ రాజైన కరన్దేవ్ ఈ దేవాలయాన్ని నిర్మించాడు. ప్రతిరోజూ సూర్యకిరణాలు శ్రీ మహాలక్ష్మి దేవతా విగ్రహాని తాకుతాయి. మహాలక్ష్మి దేవాలయం 'హేమాడ్ పంతి' నిర్మాణశైలిలో కట్టబడింది. ఇది చాలా విశాలమైన ప్రాంగణంలో చుట్టూ ఎత్తైన ప్రహారీ గోడతో ఉంటుంది. ప్రాంగణం మధ్యలో ఉన్న అమ్మవారి ఆలయం ఒక అద్భుత కళాసృష్టి అని చెప్పవచ్చు. ఆలయమంతా మనోహరమైన శిల్పాలతో నిండి ఉంటుంది.
పశ్చిమాభిముఖంగా ఉండే మహాలక్ష్మి దేవాలయం గర్భగుడి ముందు సుమారు వందడుగుల పొడవు గల విశాలమైన మండపం ఉంటుంది. గర్భగుడి చుట్టూ సన్నని ప్రదక్షిణ మార్గం వుంది. గర్భగుడిలో సుమారు ఆరడుగుల చదరంగా ఉన్న ఎత్తైన వేదిక మీద రెండడుగుల పీఠం, దానిమీద మహాలక్ష్మి విగ్రహం కూర్చొని ఉన్న భంగిమలో ఉంటుంది. మూడడుగుల ఎత్తున్న మూర్తి చాలా అందంగా ఆకర్షణీయంగా ఉంటుంది. అమ్మకు బంగార పాదకులున్నాయి. కిరీటం పైన విష్ణువు తల్పం అయిన శేషనాగు ఆకృతి ఉంటుంది. గర్భాలయం బయట శ్రీ యంత్రం, గర్భాలయం ఎదురుగా సింహ వాహనం కలవు. ఆలయం నందు శ్రీ మహా గణపతి, శ్రీ మహాకాళి, శ్రీ మహాస్వతి కొలువైనారు. ఆలయం ప్రాంగణములో శ్రీ మహాదేవ లింగము, నవగ్రహాలు, విఠోబా మందిరం, రాధకృష్ణాలయం, శని మందిరం, సూర్యుడు, మహిసాసుర మర్థని, విష్ణువు, తుల్జా భవాని మొదలగు విగ్రహాలు ఉంటాయి. అమ్మవారికి ప్రతి నిత్యం అర్చనలు, నేతి నైవేద్యం, హారతి సేవలు మొదలగునవి ఘనంగా జరుగుచుంటాయి. ప్రతి శుక్రవారం నాడు సేవలు విశేషముగా నిర్వహించు చుంటారు. అశ్వయుజ శుద్ధ పాఢ్యమి నుంచి తొమ్మిది రోజులు పాటు గొప్ప ఉత్సవాలు జరుగుతాయి. మహా అన్నదాన సేవ కూడ ఘనంగా నిర్వహించబడును.
అమ్మవారికి ప్రతి శుక్రవారం ప్రత్యేక పూజలు నిర్వహిస్తారు. చైత్రమాసంలో వచ్చే పౌర్ణమితో పాటుగా దేవి నవరాత్రులు (ఆశ్వయజ) వేడుకలు జరుపుతారు. ప్రతి శుక్రవారం, పౌర్ణమి నాడు సాయంత్రాలలో అమ్మవారిని ఆలయం వెలుపల ఊరేగిస్తారు. దేవి నవరాత్రి ఉత్సవం ప్రధాన ఉత్సవం. ఆశ్వయుజ శుద్ధ పంచమి నాడు విశేషంగా గొప్ప ఉత్సవం జరుగుతుంది. ఆలయ ప్రాంగణము ప్రకాశవంతమైన రంగులతో, సంగీతంతో ప్రతిధ్వనిస్తుంది. ఉత్సవంలో అమ్మవారిని నగరమంతా ఊరేగిస్తారు. ఆ రోజున అమ్మవారి ఉత్సవ మూర్తిని నగరానికి తూర్పుగా ఐదు కి.మీ. దూరంలో ఉన్న తెంబ్లాయి అమ్మవారి ఆలయం నకు ఊరేగింపుగా తీసుకొని వెళ్తారు. దేవి నవరాత్రి పండుగల సమయంలో స్థానికులు, దూర ప్రాంతములు నుంచి కొల్హాపూర్ కి తండోపతండాలుగా వస్తారు. ఇదిగాక చైత్ర పూర్ణిమ
రోజున జరిగే ఉత్సవంలో అమ్మవారిని నగరమంతా ఊరేగిస్తారు. మహారాష్ట్రీయులకు కొల్హాపూర్ అత్యంత పవిత్ర యాత్రాస్థలం.
సికింద్రాబాద్ - ముంభై రైలు మార్గములో గల పూనె రైల్వే జంక్షన్ నందు అన్ని రైలు ఆగుతాయి. పూనె జంక్షన్ కు దక్షిణ దిశగా మీరజ జంక్షన్ మీదగా లోండా రైలు జంక్షన్ వరకు బ్రాంచి రైలు మార్గం కలదు. మీరజ రైల్వే స్టేషన్ నాలుగు రైలు జంక్షన్. మీరజ కు నైఋతి దిశగా కొల్హాపుర్ కు 48 కీ.మీ బ్రాంచి రైలు మార్గం కలదు. కొల్హాపుర్ రైల్వే స్టేషన్ పేరు " శ్రీ ఛత్రపతి సాహు మహారాజు " గా మర్పు చేసియున్నారు. ముంభై - కొల్హాపుర్ రైలు సర్వీసులు (వయా) పూనె, మీరజ జంక్షన్ మీదగా ఉంటాయి. హైదరాబాద్/తిరుపతి నుంచి బయలుదేరిన రైలు సర్వీసులు (వయా) గుంతకల్, లోండా, మీరజ జంక్షన్ మీదగా ఉంటాయి.
పూనె రైల్వే స్టేషన్ కు సమీపంలో బస్ స్టాండ్ కలదు. ఇక్కడ నుంచి కొల్హాపుర్ కు బస్సులు ఉంటాయి. ముంభై, రత్నగిరి, షోలాపూర్, పండరీపురం మొదలగు ప్రాంతములు నుంచి బస్సులు కలవు. కర్నాటక రాష్ట్రం లోని బీజపూర్, బెల్గామ్ మొదలగు ప్రాంతములు నుంచి బస్సులు ఉన్నాయి.

The city of Kolhapur is located on the banks of Panchganga river in the southern part of Maharashtra. It is the district headquarters. Kolhapur is known as Dakshina Kashi. Here we can visit Sri Mahalakshmi Amma. Amma is also known as Ambabai. It is symbolized as one of the Shakti Peethas. Kolhapur was called "Karveer" in Puranas. Chalukya king Karandev built this temple. Every day the sun rays touch the idol of Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi. Mahalakshmi temple is built in 'Hemad Panti' style of architecture. It consists of a very spacious courtyard surrounded by a high parapet wall. The Ammavari temple in the center of the courtyard is said to be a masterpiece of art. The temple is full of beautiful sculptures.
In front of the sanctum sanctorum of the Mahalakshmi temple facing west is a spacious mandapam about hundred feet long. There is a narrow circular path around the sanctum sanctorum. In the sanctum sanctorum, there is a two-foot pedestal on a raised platform, about six feet square, on which is the idol of Mahalakshmi in a sitting posture. The three feet tall figure is very beautiful and attractive. Amma has golden feet. Above the crown is the shape of Seshanagu, the talpa of Lord Vishnu. There is a Sri Yantra outside the sanctum sanctorum and a lion vehicle in front of the sanctum sanctorum. Sri Maha Ganapati, Sri Mahakali and Sri Mahaswati are enshrined in the temple. In the temple premises there are idols like Sri Mahadeva Lingam, Navagrahas, Vithoba Mandir, Radhakrishna Temple, Shani Mandir, Surya, Mahisasura Marthani, Vishnu, Tulja Bhavani etc. Archanas, Neti Naivedyam, Harati services etc. are held grandly to Amma. Services are specially organized on every Friday. Great festivities are held for nine days from Ashvayuja Shuddha Padhyam. Maha Annadana Seva is also organized in a grand manner.
A special pooja is performed every Friday for the Goddess. Goddess Navratras (Ashwayaja) are celebrated along with the full moon of Chaitra month. Every Friday, on the evenings of the full moon, the Goddess is paraded outside the temple. Devi Navratri festival is the main festival. A particularly grand festival is held on Aswayuja Shuddha Panchami. The temple premises are resounding with bright colors and music. During the festival, the goddess is paraded throughout the city.On that day, Ammavari Utsava Murti was placed five km east of the city. They take them in a procession to the Themblai Ammavari Temple which is far away. During the Devi Navratri festivals, locals and far away people come to Kolhapur in droves. This is Chaitra Poornima During the festival held on the day, the goddess is paraded throughout the city. Kolhapur is the holiest place of pilgrimage for Maharashtrians.
All trains stop at Pune Railway Junction on Secunderabad - Mumbhai railway line. There is a branch railway line southwards from Pune Junction to Londa Rail Junction via Miraja Junction. Miraja railway station is a four rail junction. There is a 48 km branch railway line to Kolhapur south-west of Meeraja. The name of Kolhapur railway station has been given as "Sri Chhatrapati Sahu Maharaj". Mumbhai - Kolhapur train services (Via) via Pune, Meeraja Junction.
Train services departing from Hyderabad/Tirupati (Via) are via Guntakal, Londa, Miraja Junction.
There is a bus stand near Pune railway station. From here there are buses to Kolhapur. There are buses from Mumbhai, Ratnagiri, Sholapur, Pandaripuram etc. There are buses from Bijapur, Belgaum etc. in Karnataka state.
