కర్నాటక రాజధాని అయిన బెంగుళూరు పట్టణం నకు నైఋతి దిశగా, సుమారు 140 కీ.మీ దూరాన మైసూరు పట్టణం కలదు. ఇది గొప్ప పర్యాటక కేంద్రం. ఈ ప్రాంతాన్ని పురాణ కాలంలో "క్రౌంచ పురి" అని పిలిచేవారు. కాబట్టి దీనిని క్రౌంచ పిథం అని పిలుస్తారు. మైసూరుకు 13 కీ.మీ దూరాన " చాముండీ హిల్స్ " ఉంటుంది. సముద్ర మట్టానికి సుమారు 1200 మీటర్లు ఎత్తుగా ఉంటుంది. కొండ పైన గల చాముండీ దేవి ఆలయం శక్తి పీఠంగా ఖ్యాతి గాంచినది.
ఓడయారు వంశీయుల కులదైవం శ్రీ చాముండి దేవి. 12 వ శతాబ్దంలో హోయసల పాలకులు ఆలయాన్ని నిర్మించారని భావిస్తున్నారు. ఆలయం తూర్పు అభిముఖంగా ఉంటుంది. గర్భాలయం నందలి మూల విరాట్టు దివ్య మంగళకరముగా ఉండును. ఇది మార్కండేయ మహర్షి ప్రతిష్ట. ప్రతి నిత్యం అమ్మకు అర్చనలు, సేవలు ఘనంగా జరుగుతాయి. విజయదశమి సందర్భముగా అమ్మ వారు ఏనుగు పైన ఊరేగుతారు.
సుమారు 3000 అడుగుల ఎత్తున చాముండీ హిల్స్ ఉంది. కొండ శిఖరానికి వెయ్యి మెట్ల మార్గం కలదు. కొండ మీద 800 వ మెట్ల వద్ద ఒక చిన్న శివాలయం, ఒక పెద్ద నల్లరాతి నంది విగ్రహం కలవు. నంది విగ్రహం 15 అడుగుల ఎత్తుతో, 24 అడుగుల పొడవుతో ఉంటుంది. నంది విగ్రహం మెడ చుట్టూ చాలా అందమైన రాతి గంటలు చెక్కబడి ఉన్నాయి. చాముండీ హిల్స్ మీద అమ్మ వారి ఆలయంతో పాటు ప్రాచీన శివాలయం కలదు. స్వామిని శ్రీ మహాబలేశ్వర్ గా పిలుస్తారు. దీనికి వెనుక భాగం వైపు శ్రీ నారాయణ స్వామి ఆలయం, బస్ స్టాప్ వద్ద మహిషాసుర ఆకృతి కూడ కలవు. పూర్వం చాముండీ హిల్స్ ను మహాబలాద్రి గా పిలుచేవారు. మహాబలాద్రి పర్వతం పైన మహాబలేశ్వర్ లింగము స్వయంభూ అని స్ధల పురాణం చెప్పుతుంది. చాముండీ దేవి ఆలయం నకు దక్షిణ దిశలో ఉంటుంది. మహాబలేశ్వర్ ఆలయం నకు వెనుక భాగం వైపు శ్రీ నారాయణ స్వామి ఆలయం ఉంటుంది.
బెంగుళూరు - మంగుళూరు రైలు మార్గంలో మైసూరు ఉంటుంది. బెంగుళూరు నుంచి రైలు సర్వీసులున్నాయి. తిరుపతి - మైసూరు ప్యాసింజర్ రైలు ఉంది. బెంగుళూరు (RS) కు ఎదురగా RTC bus stand ఉన్నది. ఇక్కడ నుంచి మైసూరు కు హెచ్చు బస్సులు కలవు. మైసూరు (RS) కు ఒక కీ.మీ దూరాన RTC bus stand ఉంటుంది. వీటి మధ్య సిట్టి సర్వీసులు, ఆటోలు ఉంటాయి. సిట్టి బస్ స్టాండ్ నుంచి చాముండీ హిల్స్ కు సిట్టి బస్ నెం. 201 బయలు దేరుతాయి. ప్రతి రోజు స్ధానిక పర్యాటక స్ధలాలు సందర్శించుటకు టూర్ సర్వీసులు ఉంటాయి. వీటి సమాచారం రైల్వే స్టేషన్ నందు దొరుకును. స్ధానిక టూర్స్ నందు చాముండీ హిల్స్ కూడ ఒక భాగం.

Mysore is about 140 km south-west of Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka. It is a great tourist destination. This area was known as "Krauncha Puri" in Puranic times. Hence it is known as Krauncha Pitham. "Chamundi Hills" is 13 km away from Mysore. It is about 1200 meters above sea level. The Chamundi Devi temple on top of the hill is famous for Shakti Peetha.
Shri Chamundi Devi is the clan god of Odayaru clan. The Hoysala rulers are believed to have built the temple in the 12th century. The temple faces east. Moola Virattu Divya in the sanctum is auspicious. This is the honor of Sage Markandeya. Prayers and services to Amma are performed every day. On the occasion of Vijayadashami, Amma takes a procession on an elephant.
At an altitude of about 3000 feet are the Chamundi Hills. There are a thousand steps to the top of the hill. At the 800th step on the hill, there is a small Shiva temple and a large black stone Nandi statue. Nandi idol is 15 feet high and 24 feet long. There are many beautiful stone bells carved around the neck of the Nandi idol. On the Chamundi Hills there is an ancient Shiva temple along with Amma's temple. The Lord is known as Sri Mahabaleshwar. Towards the rear of this is the Sri Narayana Swamy Temple and the Mahishasura sculpture at the bus stop. Earlier Chamundi Hills was known as Mahabaladri. Sthala Purana says that the Mahabaleshwar linga is Swayambhu on top of Mahabaladri mountain. Chamundi Devi Temple is towards the South. Towards the back of the Mahabaleshwar Temple is the Sri Narayana Swamy Temple.
Mysore is on the Bangalore - Mangalore rail route. There are train services from Bangalore. There is a Tirupati - Mysore passenger train. RTC bus stand is opposite to Bangalore (RS). There are many buses from here to Mysore. RTC bus stand is a key to Mysore (RS). These include city services and autos.From City Bus Stand to Chamundi Hills City Bus No. 201 exits. Every day there are tour services to visit the local tourist spots. Information about these can be found at the railway station. Chamundi Hills is also a part of Sdhanika Tours.
